Aim

To explore buildings which are special to the children.
To begin to understand why some buildings are important to Christians.

Preparation

Before the lesson photocopy one worksheet for each child. Photocopy images of church buildings.

Lesson

Begin by asking children to draw / write or talk about buildings which are special to them.

What are these buildings? What happens inside them? When do these things occur? What makes these buildings special?

Following discussion, show children images of church buildings.

Do the children know what type of building these are? Inform the children that these buildings are special to some people.

Do the children know who these people are?

If necessary, revise what was learnt in the previous lesson and reprise the rhyme.

What makes these buildings special?

For most Christians, what makes their church building special is not the building itself, but what goes on inside it.

Activity

Using the worksheet, invite the children to write down their thoughts about what may happen in a church building.

Do the children know when these events occur?

Conclusion

Conclude by informing the children that although a church building may be used every day of the week, Sunday is a special time.

Notes

Younger children will be better able to relate to images of church buildings within their own locality.
