Aim

To introduce the Bible as a history of the Jewish people.
To become familiar with the story of Abraham and Sarah.

Lesson

Remind the children that last half term, they looked at the Bible as a rule book. Inform them that the Bible is also a history book. Discuss the word 'history'.

The first half of the Bible which is called the Old Testament is the history of a group of people called the Jews. What do the know about Jewish people? The first Jewish person was a man called Abraham.

Share with children the story of Abraham, Sarah and the birth of Isaac (Genesis 12:1-7, 15:1-6, 18:1-15, 21:1-8).

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • talk / write about something which they have wanted for a long time
  • talk / write about something which makes them laugh
  • make a list of jokes
  • sing Father Abraham
  • draw a pictorial history of their lives so far.
