Aim

To begin to understand the practice and importance of Muslim prayer.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about the Qur'an. For Muslims, it is Allah's book of rules. There are many rules in the Qur'an about when and where Muslims should pray.

Use text and images to inform children about the Muslim practice of prayer.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• learn about the other four pillars of Islam
• visit a mosque
• look at artefacts related to prayer within Islam - prayer mat, compass, prayer beads
• talk / write about their own experiences of prayer.

Conclusion

Conclude by listening to a recording of The Call to Prayer.
