Aim

To become familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan.

Lesson

Revise what was taught in the previous lesson about loving God. Jesus said the second most important commandment was, ' Love your neighbour as you love yourself.' When Jesus said this, someone asked him 'Who is my neighbour?'

Jesus answered by telling a story about a good Samaritan. Inform the children that the Samaritans were the enemies of Jesus' listeners.

Share with children the story of the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10:30-37)

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • act out the story
  • draw a cartoon strip of the story
  • talk / write about a time when someone helped them or when they have helped another person
  • analyze the story in terms of cold pricklies and warm fuzzies (see Getting on with you).

Conclusion

Conclude by informing children that Jesus said the two commandments are alike. People love God by loving other people.
