Aim

To consider how people demonstrate their love for God.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught last week about the Bible as a book which contains many hundreds of rules. Once someone asked Jesus which rule was the most important. He answered, by quoting the rule,

'Love God with all of your heart, with all of your mind and with all of your strength.'

With the children's help, write this sentence on the board. (Literacy)

Discuss how people show their love for God: through worship and prayer, through caring for His creation, through knowing and trying to follow his rules.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • record their responses during the discussion
  • interview a Christian about what it means to love God
  • write about something which they do with all their heart, mind and strength
  • read the first four commandments
  • decide upon the most important class rule.

Conclude by demonstrating the sign of the cross, which is done by touching, in order, one's fore head, chest, left shoulder and right shoulder. This gesture can be interpreted as a reminder of this commandment.
