Preparation

Before the lesson photocopy one worksheet for each child. Prepare a list of questions for the Info. game.

Activity

Select a pair of friends.

  • Ask one of them three simple questions about themselves, for example, favourite food, mum's first name, favourite toy. Replies are not to be spoken.
  • Friend who is not being asked is to write down or whisper to other adult what she/he believes the answers to the questions will be.

How many were right?

Choose another pair of friends. Repeat the game.

If children appear to know a lot about each other, continue lesson. If not, play game below.

The Info Game

In pairs, children have three minutes to find out as many personal details they can about each other using the resource sheet which you have prepared. After three minutes, volunteers can share their newly acquired knowledge with the rest of the class.

People become friends by talking and listening to each other. Sometimes they talk without using their voices. How?

  1. They write to each other.
In small groups, children silently circulate a message which one of them has written.
  2. They talk through other people.
In small groups, children play Chinese whispers.

Lesson

Draw children's attention to the fact, that messages often get mixed up using this means of communication.

Having discussed a few means of communication, ask children how does Katie, who is a Christian, talk to God? Answer - prayer.

But prayer just isn't Katie talking and God listening. Katie believes that God talks to her. How?

  1. Through writing - Bible.
  2. Through other people - teachers, parents, friends, vicars.
(As the children discovered by playing Chinese whispers, people often get it wrong.)
  3. Through her conscience - the little voice inside her head.

Children to reflect on the times when they have heard that little voice inside.

Worksheet

Children can record their learning by completing worksheet - 'God Speaks to Christians'.

Notes

This lesson is the ideal opportunity to invite a Christian visitor into your school. They could expand on the lesson by talking personally on how Jesus speaks to them. Your local church will probably contain at least one retired teacher or head who will have the necessary experience of dealing with young children.
